Milk powder advertisements banned

Dr. P. G. Mahipala, Director General of Health Services has requested all the printed and electronic media heads not to broadcast or advertise on milk powder until further notice is given in the face of the issues that has arisen with regards to the imported milk powder.

Ministry of Health has previously announced that it has been confirmed through lab tests that the milk powder imported from New Zealand is contaminated with a harmful chemical named DCD.

Meanwhile, Patali Champika Ranawaka, Minister of Technology, Research & Atomic Energy, says that hiding the fact that the milk powder contains DCD, is a grievous crime and that no one should support it.

He also pointed out that countries like China, Russia, Thailand and Vietnam have already stopped importing milk powder from New Zealand.

He made these comments at a public lecture held yesterday (6) evening in Colombo titled "poisonous food which leads to a silent death"

The Minister also stated that the story going on in the society that DCD is included in milk powder is not a lie so that the authorities should solve this problem before the public takes it into their hands.
He said that he is pointing out the danger of this situation as a father, as the media, politicians and even professionals are not coming forward to talk about this.

He also warned that there will be a possibility of unloading tons of milk powder in these days as the import of milk powder has been banned.

The Minister added that the authorities should keep an eye on it and must try to find a solution by a bureaucratic intervention.
