DIG’s son speaks of assault

The condition of the son of DIG Ravi Waidyalankara, Asela Waidyalankara is currently reported to be stable and he is undergoing treatment at a leading private hospital in Colombo.

Asela Waidyalankara, son of DIG Ravi Waidyalankara speaking said two Police officers in uniform who were on duty and had intervened during the assault were also allegedly assaulted by the gang which comprised the son of Minister Maithripala Sirisena.

Police sources in Kalkudah confirmed that two Police officers who were on duty at the beach in uniform were assaulted.

Leading Criminal Lawyers speaking said the Criminal Procedure Code and the Penal Code was very clear that the above did not conform to offenses bailable by the Police and the suspects must be produced before a Magistrate.

The gang of 13 which included the son of the Minister had been released on Sunday night on Police bail without being produced before a Magistrate.

Refuting allegations of prompting the assault, Asela said he was currently nursing a shoulder injury and would had never got involved in an altercation

“Any ordinary person would know that they can’t take on 15 men. I’m nursing a shoulder injury and would never have gotten into an altercation. It’s irrational to even think of fighting 15 men alone,” he said.

“While they were assaulting me, there were two Police officers on duty close by, I ran to them and urged them to help me and they shielded me and in the process they were also assaulted,” Asela Waidyalankara said.

Speaking further in his hospital bed, the soft spoken telecom executive said that he urged the gang not to take photographs with his wife in the background which prompted the brutal assault.

“I just came from a boat ride and went to the room to keep our belongings. As I was coming back I noticed about 15 people standing there, all of them were drunk and one person had removed his swimming trunk and displayed himself to my wife with another guy taking pictures. I’m also an amateur photographer and I knew what they were doing,” he said.

Speaking further, Waidyalankara said that, the gang had then surrounded him and his wife who had rushed to his help was also assaulted.
“I was with my family and didn’t want any altercation so I went up to them and told them very politely.

These are the exact words I used “Machang you took some pictures of my wife if you can show them to me and delete them, you’re here to have a good time and I’m here to have a good time, let’s not spoil it”.

Then a few more people started surrounding me and hurling abuses at me. I was shoved and at that point they started assaulting me, my wife who came to save me also was assaulted,” a shaken Waidyalankara said.

Eyewitness earlier confirmed  that the gang had been heavily intoxicated and were acting in a lewd and obstructing manner
The victim was then admitted to the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital and was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit. Sources said there was severe political pressure on the Hospital to release the victim.

He was later transferred to a leading hospital in Colombo.

Sources meanwhile alleged that Minister Maithripala Sirisena escorted the gang including his son to the Chavakachcheri Hospital where the Judicial Medical Officer had stated issued a certificate to the effect that the group had not been under the Influence of Liquor.

Eyewitnesses to the incident speaking said that the group was under the influence of liquor and this was also confirmed by the resort in which the two groups had been staying at.

Pork to be on menu of Parliament canteen in future

Despite objections from Muslim MPs, the Speaker decided yesterday that pork may be offered, to MPs, in the Parliament canteen, revoking a previous ban on it, informed sources said.

Earlier Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa had, at the request of Muslim MPs, decided not to offer pork at the parliamentary canteen. However some MPs, including Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunga, had objected to the decision. The Speaker had revoked the decision yesterday. He had reportedly said at the House Committee meeting that one should not place restrictions on the choices of food available to other people.

He had said that if any MP wanted to eat pork, he or she should inform the canteen authorities in advance. MPs have long had the right to order beef and mutton in the canteen.

At yesterday’s meeting, MP Azwer voiced his objections to this decision on the grounds that Islam did not permit the consumption of pork. This led to a heated argument between him and Mr. Amaratunga.

The Speaker also revoked the price increase of meals served at the canteen to the guests of MPs.    The latest decision is to charge Rs. 250 per meal from an MP who has no more than 12 guests.   If an MP has more than 12 guests for a meal, Rs.600 will be charged from him on account of each guest.

Hirunika ‘applauds’ AG’s decision

Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra’s daughter Hirunika speaking to the media outside the Colombo Magistrate’s  Court today said she applauded the Attorney General’s decision to direct the CID to file cases against MP Duminda Silva and 13 others in connection with the killing of her father.

“People had witnessed a breakdown in the judicial system in the country. No one can deny that. I once said that if justice is meted out in this case, people will come to trust the judicial system again. We never expected a decision like this. I did not have any confidence in justice being meted out. I applaud the AG for standing up for justice,” Premachandra said.

She said until her last breath she would continue to seek justice for her slain father.

AG directs CID to file charges against Duminda

The Attorney General advised today the CID to file charges against 13 suspects including parliamentarian Duminda Silva over the murder of Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra and two others in Kollonnawa.

Then the CID filed charges of murder, conspiracy, attempted murder and unlawful assembly with a common intention against the suspects before the Colombo Magistrates court today.

Counsel Upul Kumarapperuma appearing for Mr. Premachandra’s wife asked Court to issue warrants for the arrest of Parliamentarian Duminda Silva and D.M.P.J. Galaboda because the Magistrate had the Jurisdiction to do so.

President Counsel Hemantha Warnakulasuriya appearing for Duminda Silva said his client was a victim in the incident who had sustained deadly injuries to his skull. He said the doctors who treated him had asserted that at least another 18 months would be needed for his client to recover.
He said during the inquiry before the preceding Magistrate the counsel for Mr. Premachandra’s wife moved to issue warrants for the arrest of Duminda Silva which the court had declined.

Mr. Warnakulasuriya said  at this stage the court could not issue a warrant against Duminda Silva and moved for a longer date to hear the case as the prosecution has to go through a large number of documents and statements before filing the extracts in court

Channel 4 video and pictures bogus - SL Army

There is no truth in the video or pictures transmitted by Channel 04 yesterday, state the Sri Lanka Army. Further, as depicted on the channel , the report that Prabhakaran youngest son was among those who surrendered to the Army during the stages of the war was false, said Army spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasuriya.

‘They use lies, half-truths, rumours, and numerous forms of speculation and interestingly these come up as we get closer to a UNHRC meeting but die down thereafter’ the brigadier said.

If there is genuine concern in bringing perpetrators to justice the concerned parties have to make complaints to the police with whatever evidence have rather than floating rumours and baseless allegations through the internet and other media. I wish they were more interested in having these investigated, and if they cooperate with credible evidence we shall solve these once and for all,” he said in a statement to the media.

The Brigadier also said that no substantive evidence has been presented for the Army to launch an investigation. “Unfortunately, it appears that the parties who float such baseless allegations never want these to be investigated or solved. They want to keep them as mysteries to tarnish the country's good image as and when it suits their agendas,” he said .

James Packer in Colombo for mega gaming venture

Billionaire gaming mogul James Packer, son of the famous Kerry Packer, is in town to explore prospects for a mega gaming venture in Sri Lanka.

Packer Jr. had arrived yesterday and held meetings with Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa and Treasury Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundera.

Opportunities explored include a US$ 350 million gaming venture down D.R. Wijewardena Mawatha, which the Government is keen to develop as an entertainment centre.

Rated as the third richest Australia by Forbes magazine with an estimated wealth of $ 6 billion, Packer Jr. inherited control of the family company, Consolidated Press Holdings Limited, which controls investments in Crown Limited, Consolidated Media Holdings and other companies.

He severed the family’s deep ties to the media sector when he sold pay-TV company Consolidated Media Holdings to Newscorp., pocketing $ 1 billion. That leaves him to focus on casino empire Crown Ltd. In Forbes Australia’s richest list, James reaped the biggest gain in wealth on the list, $ 1.5 billion.

Crown Ltd. has over 13,000 employees and wholly owns and operates two integrated resorts: Crown Entertainment Complex in Melbourne (Crown Melbourne), Australia’s largest casino and Burswood Entertainment Complex in Perth (Burswood).

Crown Melbourne operates 2,500 gaming machines and 350 table games.
It also commands over 1,600 hotel rooms. Melco Crown also has two properties, City of Dreams and Altira Macau.

Burswood operates 1,750 gaming machines and 170 table games and the InterContinental Perth Burswood hotel comprises 405 guest rooms. Holiday Inn Burswood hotel comprises 291 guest rooms.

In 2011, Packer’s ASX-listed Crown Limited acquired a 100% interest in the prestigious Aspinall’s Club in London, developed through a joint venture between Crown and Packer’s family friend, Damian Aspinall, the son of John Aspinall.

Together with Damian Aspinall, Packer is creating a group of casino complexes in Great Britain called Aspers. He already has a stake in casinos in London’s West End, Swansea, and Newcastle.
